How Can I Create A Gothic Blood Text Effect In Photoshop? - Difficulty: Medium
blood text effect photoshop
In this tutorial we will create a gothic blood text effect, with an illustrational cartoon twist. The final steps are only added effects, you may just want to keep it as it is in Step 2. You will need a fine pen, paper, and a scanner, as this tutorial is a little more hands on. We will be drawing the letters you want first. You don't have to literally draw them the same as me, instead you can do it your own way, I'm just showing you my example for a little inspiration (below). I wanted it to feel a little sickly and spiteful, yet with an added gothic feel, which is why I designed the typeface with serifs and a slight Inner Bevel. If you don't have Photoshop, or you want to upgrade to the new CS5 Version.
1: Drawing The Blood Effect As A Typeface
-
1.1. Draw it out something like I've done below, then scan it into Photoshop.
-
1.2. Select the Magic Wand tool (Toggle Shift + M) and use it to erase your white paper away.
-
1.3. Create A New Layer (Ctrl + Shift + N), drag it below your text layer, and fill it black.
2: Making The Text A Digital Illustration
-
2.1. Add a red (#FF0000) colour overlay to your text at Layer » Layer Style » Color Overlay.
-
2.2. Reduce the opacity of this layer to 70%.
-
2.3. Add Layer » Layer Style » Inner Shadow, with 100% Opacity, 0px Distance, 0% Choke and 1px Size.
-
2.4. Add a Smooth Inner Bevel at Layer » Layer Style » Bevel And Emboss, with 50% Opacities, 0px Soften, 1000% Depth and 15px Size.
-
2.5. Duplicate the layer (Ctrl + J), trash any layer styles attatched to it, set the opacity to 70%, then set the Blending Mode to Overlay.
-
2.6. Create A New Layer, then Merge Down (Ctrl + E) your text layers into it. All layers, except your background, should be flattened now.
-
2.7. From this point on is just experimentation - I prefer it on a white background with a very thin Inner Shadow, like I did before.
-
2.8. What I love about this tutorial is that you can now get many different outcomes by using Filter » Artistic - see Step 3.
